Hydrotherapy for seniors

For most senior citizens, a soak in a hot tub has the same benefits it does for the rest of us – relaxation, fun, socializing, and pain relief. In fact, many senior centers and senior living facilities have spas available for their members and residents.

Arthritis sufferers, in particular, may find that their pain is eased by the warmth of a spa. The Arthritis Foundation recommends warm water therapy to help loosen joints, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve mobility, both during the soak, and afterward.

Senior citizens with stiff joints are encouraged not only to soak, but to spend time in the tub moving around, using the opportunity to exercise their body when they are more buoyant, and while their pain is being eased by the water.

Much has been made about whether or not our senior citizens should spend time in a hot tub. While it’s true they should take their overall health into consideration – like anyone should – seniors can certainly enjoy and benefit from time in a spa.

The primary concerns for seniors wanting to enjoy a soak are the danger of falling, and the risk to those with low blood pressure. The heat of the water can cause blood vessels to dilate, causing unsafe drops in blood pressure.

Senior citizens are especially encouraged to make use of assistive devices, such as a sturdy Spa Side Handrail and step to reduce the risk of falling.

As always, consult a doctor if you have any concerns about whether to partake in a hot tub.
