5 Hot Tub Maintenance Tips for Oklahoma’s “Wild” Seasons

If you’ve lived in the Sooner State for more than a week, you know the weather forecast is more of a “suggestion” than a rule. In Oklahoma City, we can experience a 40-degree temperature swing in a single afternoon, followed by a dry line of thunderstorms and a dusting of red clay.

Owning a hot tub here is a dream, but only if you know how to handle our “wild” seasons. At Emerald Spring Spas, our Certified Spa Technicians have seen it all.

To keep your water crystal clear and your equipment running through 2026 and beyond, follow this seasonal Oklahoma checklist.

1. Spring: The “Hail & Clay” Defense

Spring in OKC means two things: severe weather and everything being covered in a fine layer of red dust.

  • Protect the Shell: Before the dry lines form, ensure your cover straps are locked down tight. High-wind gusts can lift a cover, leaving your shell vulnerable to hail damage.
  • The Dust Factor: Red clay dust is incredibly fine and can clog a filter faster than almost anything else. During high-wind weeks, rinse your filters weekly rather than monthly. A quick spray with a garden hose prevents that dust from turning into mud inside your plumbing.

2. Summer: Managing the “Heatwave Chemistry”

When July hits and the temperatures climb past 100°F, your hot tub water reacts differently.

  • Chlorine Consumption: High heat and UV exposure can “burn off” your sanitizer faster. If you aren’t using a FreshWater® Salt System, you’ll need to check your levels more frequently during a heatwave.
  • Cool Down: Did you know you can use your spa as a “cool tub”? Drop the temperature to 80°F for a refreshing dip after a backyard BBQ. Just remember to shock the water after a high “bather load” (lots of people), as sweat and sunscreen can throw off your pH levels.

3. Fall: Dealing with the “Great Leaf Drop”

As the blackjack oaks and maples start to turn, they inevitably end up in your backyard.

  • Clear the Perimeter: Keep the area around your spa cabinet clear of leaf piles. Wet leaves against the cabinet can hold moisture and eventually lead to mildew or shell staining.
  • Check the Seal: Fall is the best time to inspect your cover’s vinyl. Use a UV protectant to prevent the Oklahoma sun from cracking the material, which ensures a tight seal before the winter chill arrives.

4. Winter: Pest-Proofing and “The Freeze”

This is the most common time of year people call our service department for winterizing a spa in OKC, but if you own a high-quality spa, you don’t need to drain it!

  • The “Mice” Problem: In Oklahoma, field mice look for warm places to nest as soon as the first frost hits. Most “big box” spas have open bottoms or thin plastic sheets. However, the ABS polymer base on our spas is essentially a vault. It creates a seamless seal that prevents pests from chewing through your wiring or nesting in your insulation.
  • Jet Maintenance: If you aren’t using the tub during a freeze, keep it running in “Auto-Clean” or “Ready” mode. Moving water doesn’t freeze, and our insulated cabinets are designed to keep that heat trapped around the pumps.

5. Year-Round: The Filter “Deep Clean”

No matter the season, cleaning hot tub filters is the #1 way to extend the life of your spa.

  • The 2026 Standard: We recommend a “Triple Threat” approach:
    1. Weekly: Rinse with water.
    2. Monthly: Use a dedicated filter cleaner spray.
    3. Quarterly: Soak the filter in a chemical degreaser overnight.
